When brothers Jack and Tom Lidgett took over Ashburton Cycles six months ago, they were excited about growing the community based, family friendly bicycle store.
Both had been studying and were ready to jump into the workforce, ready to take on their new business venture together.
They’ve found a lot of their customers are proud to support a local business.
“There are a lot of people who get a lot of joy out of supporting local businesses,” Tom said.
It’s something of an investment to buy a bike, so Tom and Jack are eager to help customers through the process.
Customers can take their bike for a test run before they buy it, to make sure they’re making the right choice.
Something the brothers have noticed since taking over the business is the fact that bikes, and bike-riding, is a lovely activity for families to enjoy together.
Whenever kids visit the store, they inevitably want to try out the bikes on display, and Tom and Jack are always happy to oblige.
They are particularly keen to encourage children to enjoy riding their bikes, and that’s why they want parents to make sure they’re making the right decisions.
“We sell the the Neo by Apollo range, they are the lightest kids bikes in Australia,” Tom said.
In their experience, kids don’t enjoy riding heavier bikes and it becomes difficult for them.
They really want to engender a love for bike riding from a young age, reminding parents to avoid buying cheap toy bikes, and rather invest in a good quality, child’s bike.
“They make riding difficult, and they won’t enjoy it,” Tom said of the cheap bikes.
Customers who mention this article to Tom or Jack, can receive 10 per cent off when they purchase a Neo children’s bike.
